OBITUARY:

Carol L. Babcock transitioned peacefully on September 17, 2010. She was bm Warrenton, Georgia the twelfth child of John and Carrie Latimer.

Carol attended elementary school in Warrenton, Georgia and high school at Paine College in Augusta, Georgia. She received her Bachelor's degree from Savannah State University majoring in Elementary Education and a Master's degree in Early Childhood Education from New York University. She completed her Post Graduate work at the University of Georgia with a specialty in reading.

Carol taught first grade for thirty-seven years and ended her career as a Reading Resources Teacher for the Richmond County School System. Her stellar reputation as a first grade teacher led parents to specifically seek her as their children's first grade teacher, confident that they would receive the foundation needed for later success in school. After her retirement, she volunteered her time teaching young people to read.

Carol accepted Christ at an early age, joining Union Baptist Church in Warrenton, Georgia. She married Futhey Babcock on August 25, 1939. After her marriage, she joined her husband at Williams Memorial CME Church, Augusta, Georgia. Through the years, she worked diligently in various ministries of the church including the choir, Sunday School and the Board of Trustees.

Carol was very active in many civic and social organizations. Among them are the Women's Civic Club, Links, Incorporated and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. She was also an original member of the Augusta Chorale.

Carol enjoyed cooking, gardening (especially flowers), decorating and shopping beautiful clothes and jewelry. She was the consummate cook and her family Sunday dinners were legendary. Family and friends were very important to her. She brightened our lives with her humor and wit. She was a loving and caring wife, friend and favorite "Auntie."

Her joy and satisfaction came more from giving then receiving. She was an inspiration many. Her presence in our lives framed unforgettable memories. Her selfless devotion always remain in our hearts. Carol's light illuminated brightly for all to see her good works with family, students, friends and those who were fortunate to come within her glow. While her light now shines from above, we can still bask in the afterglow left with us.

She leaves to cherish her memories, her husband, Futhey; a devoted niece. Dr. Edith Calhoun; sisters-in-law, Ruby Latimer, Elizabeth Latimer and Lucille Floyd. She leaves living legacy in the host of nieces, nephews, god children and special sister-friends, who will forever cherish the impact that she has left on their lives.
