Honorable Horace Taliaferro Ward
Federal
Judge Horace Taliaferro Ward died Saturday, April 23, 2016. He was the
first Black to serve on the federal bench in Georgia in 1979 and was appointed
by President Jimmy Carter. In the
early 1950's he became the first Black to challenge the racially discriminatory
practices at the University of Georgia (UGA). He filed a lawsuit against the state of Georgia over legal school
segregation, after UGA officials denied him admission because of his race.
Horace Ward practiced law in Atlanta from 1960 to
1974. He was a deputy city attorney of Atlanta from 1969 to 1970. He was
an assistant county attorney for Fulton County, from
1970 to 1974. He was a member of the Georgia State Senate from 1965 to 1974. He was a Fulton County Civil Court
Judge from 1974 to 1977. He was a judge to the Superior Court of Georgia from 1977 to 1979.

Atlanta, GA 30308 on the day of the service at 9: 30 a.m.

My heart was deeply touched after hearing of your recent loss. I too have lost many family and friends to death. Revelation 21:4 has always provided me with a source of comfort, hopefully it will you as well.
