As we pause on this day, we look back on the life of
Harold Kenneth Latimer. Entering this world on December 24, 1925,
he was the son of the late John and Elizabeth Latimer.
Raised by his loving grandmother, Alice Norflett,
after the death of his mother. He was the brother
of the late Roy Latimer, Alton Latimer and Elizabeth
“Betty” Latimer Dawson. After attending Morehouse College
and Savannah State College, he worked at The Harshaw
Chemical Company in Cleveland, Ohio.
Mr. Latimer was a quiet man, who had a deep
and abiding love of nature. He soon knew he
wanted a simple life in a place he loved so much,
Norwood Street in Warrenton, Georgia.
He loved hunting, fishing and had a passion
for raising and training dogs. He was a kind
and peaceful man, a man who knew the acquisition
of material things was not the ultimate goal in life.
His wealth was his Christian words of wisdom that
lifted the spirits of those who knew him.
His gift to others was his warm genuine smile
and his big, booming laugh that could fill up the entire room.
He was a gentle giant, kind to all. He had a special way
of making you smile with his down-to-earth wit and humor.
In his latter years, his favorite pastime was to sit on the
porch to chat and laugh with those who passed his way.
At the age of seven, he joined Pleasant Grove Baptist Church
and was recently honored as the oldest living male member.
Mr. Latimer was a Christian man and he knew that God
had called him into the ministry. In fact, he preached
his first sermon right here at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.
But, he was not a man that wanted to be in the limelight
and decided to pass his Christian guidance and advice to those
who crossed his path and not in front of an audience.
However, at any moment, he could burst into a rousing rendition
of “Amazing Grace” or “Precious Lord, Take My Hand”.
He was a delight to all that knew him, and when God
called his child home on December 12, 2011,
he was ready. He touched the lives of many
and he will be sorely missed by his neighbors on Norwood Street,
Warrenton, his loving family and friends.
Well done, Harold Latimer, God loves you and we love you too.
